To understand the Iranian leaders’ perspective, you must look past conventional diplomacy and into the heart of Twelver Shia Muslim Doctrine. This worldview isn’t political; it’s fueled by a 1,300-year-old narrative of redemptive suffering rooted in the Martyrdom of Husayn at Karbala.

For Iranian leaders, victory isn’t found in economic stability, but in a “proactive apocalypse” designed to hasten the return of their messiah figure, the Mahdi.

Their strategy shifts the battlefield from traditional conflict between armies to the realm of Asymmetric Warfare, where the ultimate “kill shot” isn’t a battlefield conquest, but the exploitation of Western vulnerabilities, potentially including Grid Vulnerability. By targeting the fragile interconnectedness of our power systems, they could trigger a global “Fitna” (chaos) that forces the Mahdi’s divine intervention.

Christians view events through the lens of Biblical Eschatology. While Iranian leaders engineer chaos to summon their false messiah, we’re called to a different standard: a patient, holy endurance that trusts in the sovereign timing of the true Messiah’s kingdom that cannot be shaken.

The Western Blind Spot

Western leaders operate under a false assumption—that all national leaders seek to maximize their nation’s "Peace and Safety" while avoiding destruction.

But Iranian leaders consider Iran’s pain, destruction, and collapse as desirable. They don’t see it as defeat. Rather, it’s a requirement to expedite the fulfillment of end time Islamic prophecies.

When we look at Iran from a Western perspective, we see a conventional nation-state to be constrained by the logic of deterrence. That is, we assume that if we threaten sanctions or military strikes, they’ll moderate their behavior to prevent negative economic or military consequences.

But this is a catastrophic misunderstanding. The Iranian leadership’s definition of victory has nothing to do with economic or political survival. They operate on a sacred timeline where material ruin is a small price to pay for apocalyptic triumph.

1. “Victory Through Defeat”: The Cult of Martyrdom

To understand the Iranian theocratic mindset, we must look back 1,300 years to the Martyrdom of Husayn at Karbala. In 680 AD, the grandson of Muhammad was massacred by a superior army. For Shia Muslims, this was not a tragedy; it was the ultimate spiritual victory. It proved that the devout choose death over submission.

This created a “Martyrdom Cult” where suffering became a badge of legitimacy. When the West threatens pain, the regime views it as spiritual promotion. You cannot deter someone whose highest aspiration is to become a martyr.

2. Engineering the Apocalypse: The Theology of Chaos

Twelver Shia doctrine—the official religion of Iran—teaches that the 12th Imam (the Mahdi) went into supernatural concealment in 874 AD. They believe he will return only during a period of unprecedented global chaos and injustice, known as ‘the Great Fitna.’

While Western nations try to minimize conflict, Iranian religious leaders believe it’s their duty to “hasten the Mahdi’s return” by proactively engineering ‘Great Fitna’ chaos. For them, economic collapse and war are not tactical failures; they are necessary triggers for the Mahdi’s intervention. They believe their losing fight against evil (evil = US and Israel) will force the Mahdi to intervene to prevent their complete annihilation.

3. Geopolitical Judas-ism: Forcing the Hand of God

There is a striking Christian parallel here. Many Christian scholars suggest Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, not out of simple greed, but to force His hand.

According to this theory, by betraying Jesus to the Jewish leaders Judas hoped to compel Jesus to unleash His divine power and overthrow the “Arrogant Powers” of Rome.

Similarly, Iranian leaders are executing a geopolitical Judas strategy. They aren’t trying to “win” a conventional war; they’re trying to create a “Modern Karbala massacre” so dire that the Mahdi must emerge to achieve the final victory.

4. The Great Satan’s “Kill Shot”

The USA (aka, the Great Satan) is not pictured in Bible prophecy. Prophecy tells us Israel will be alone in the last days, with only God to protect it from complete destruction.

Apparently, the USA will somehow be politically compromised, neutralized, or destroyed.

Pride Goes Before a Fall

Every night during the current war against Iran the evening news shows Iranian targets being destroyed, and tells of more high-ranking Iranian leaders being eliminated. So, from a conventional military perspective, the US and Israel are completely victorious over a now-defenseless Iran. Their air force, navy, and air defenses have all been destroyed. US and Israeli bombers fly over Iran without resistance, bombing wherever they choose.

But, if that’s so, why are remaining Iranian leaders still defiantly rejecting peace negotiations? Do they think they can still somehow win the war against the US and Israel? Perhaps they do.

The Soft Underbelly

Iranian leaders believe their destiny is to destroy the “Arrogant Powers” of the world, especially the Great Satan and the Little Satan—the USA and Israel.

The awesome power of our military leads people to believe we’re invincible. And I believe we are—in a conventional war.

But, consider this… If your goal is to collapse a superpower to make way for the Mahdi’s global Islamic theocracy, and you can’t win against it militarily, wouldn’t you look for another way, its “soft underbelly?”

America has such a soft underbelly. It’s undefended in a number of ways, and susceptible to fatal wounds that would end America as a nation in one hour—like Babylon in Revelation 18.

For example, here are what three potential “kill shots” against the US and Israel could look like:

• The Dark Grid: Pre-positioned sleeper cells (like Hezbollah’s Unit 910) could use synchronized sabotage or cyber attack to kill our electric grid. It’s commonly believed that striking nine critical high-voltage transformer nodes would cause U.S. power grids to collapse.

  • A US government study concluded that, without electricity, up to 90% of the US population (currently 342,400,000) could be dead from disease, starvation, and criminal violence within a year.

    

• The Nuclear “Samson Option”: miniaturized nuclear weapon(s) could be provided to Iran by North Korea, China, or Russia, smuggled into the US and Israel via freighter or aircraft, then anonymously detonated in Washington D.C., NYC, Tel Aviv, and Haifa. What would their motives be?

  • Russia is weary of war in Ukraine. With the USA removed, Russia could easily overwhelm not only Ukraine but all of Europe, especially with support from socialists and Islamists now inhabiting European countries.

  • With the USA removed, North Korea could use nuclear threats to dominate and control Japan and South Korea.

  • China is heavily dependent on Venezuela and Iran for its oil supply. The US now controls both these Chinese oil sources and is certainly leveraging this control.

    • Deja Vu? In 1941 the USA’s policy of restricting Japan’s access to natural resources was a big reason for their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

• The Global Heart Attack: By mining the Strait of Hormuz, Iran can stop 20% of the world’s energy. Likewise, their proxy in Yemen can stop shipping through the Red Sea and the Suez canal. They believe that by disrupting global markets, they can cause the Western alliance—whose “god” is the economy—to disintegrate.

An Iranian “kill shot” would be a desperate attempt to ‘grab the steering wheel’ of history. But as the story of Judas reminds us, those who try to force the hand of God end up destroyed by the very chaos they unleash.

What Should You Do?

1. Move from “Just-in-Time” to “Just-in-Case”

The “Kill Shot” strategy works because modern society is fragile and lacks margin. Christians should lead the way in practical stewardship.

• The Call: Building local resilience—food storage, water filtration, and community networks—isn’t “prepping” in the secular sense; it is Proverbs 27:12 in action: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Being prepared allows you to be a provider rather than a beggar when the grid falters, turning your home into a “City on a Hill.”

2. Cultivate “Gospel Resilience”

The Iranian mindset views suffering as a weapon; the scriptural mindset views it as a refinery. If the USA collapses, our identity must not be tied to the “American Dream” or economic stability.

• The Call: Practice the “Overcomer” lifestyle now. In my trilogy, characters like Katie Whitefeather survive because their internal spiritual world is stronger than the external Alaskan winter. We must anchor our hope—not in a nation or an economy—but in the immovable Kingdom of God (Hebrews 12:28).

3. Occupy Until He Comes

Iran’s “proactive eschatology” seeks to create chaos that will end the current world system, replacing it with the Mahdi’s Islamic theocracy.

The Biblical books of Daniel and Revelation tell us that God will end the the current world system, replacing it with the Millennial Reign of Christ and His overcomers.

On the surface these two prophetic perspectives look similar, but they’re diametrically opposed to one another.

• The Mahdi may be the Antichrist, the ‘fourth beast’ of Daniel, and the beast of Revelation 13.

• Islam is incompatible with Christianity. No man can come to God except through Jesus. (John 14:6)

• Yeshua/Jesus is the true Messiah. When He comes, He will destroy the Antichrist, and His truth will replace all false religions.

• The Call: We do not stop publishing, teaching, or “freely giving” because the shadows of false religions are lengthening at the end of this age. We “occupy” (Luke 19:13) by doubling down on our unique missions. If the “Kill Shot” comes, it should find us busy with the Father’s business—sharing the Truth that survives any blackout.

Final Thoughts

The Iranian regime hopes to summon their Mahdi through unleashing global fire and chaos, even at great cost to their own people.

The people of this world system are fearful because their gods—i.e., the government, the economy, the grid, etc.—are fragile and falling.

But God’s Spirit calls Christian overcomers to be wise and stand firm, knowing that—as this world system crumbles—our citizenship is in a better country, a heavenly one, where there is no more death, or pain, or sorrow.

Yesterday, a subscriber asked a thoughtful question:

“Is the Book of Revelation prophecy, or is it metaphor?”

Many readers wonder whether the Book of Revelation should be interpreted literally or symbolically.

The short answer is both.

Prophecy Communicated Through Symbolic Language

Revelation is definitely prophetic. When you compare the Seals in the Book of Revelation with Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, the sequence of end-time events align — all four apostolic authors describe the same progression of end-time events. In Revelation, the apostle John describes these events using symbolic (apocalyptic) language, so it’s usually not literal. For example, in apocalyptic language mountains represent kingdoms or governments (Daniel 2:35, 44–45; Jeremiah 51:25), and waters represent peoples and nations (Revelation 17:15).

These examples illustrate an important principle: the symbols are not the events themselves—they represent real people, nations, and events.

Revelation’s imagery and symbols mainly come from the Hebrew Bible, using symbols that already appeared in earlier books, such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and Zechariah. Readers understand Revelation best when they recognize these earlier biblical references.

Another feature of Revelation that almost-all modern readers overlook is its literary structure.

Why Revelation Is Hard for Modern Readers

In addition to its heavy use of Old Testament symbolism, Revelation uses a chiastic literary structure — a mirrored pattern of ideas. This structure is unfamiliar to most modern Western readers, who usually try to understand the Book of Revelation chronologically, reading it from beginning to end.

In a chiasm, a book’s themes appear in a mirrored pattern so that the main point sits in the center of the book, rather than at the end.

Here’s a simple example.

In the image below, the green A-1 Prolog is mirrored in the green A-2 Epilog, the Purple B-1 is mirrored in B2, and so on. They all build to a center peak.

By comparing the details in Revelation’s Prolog (A-1) and Epilog (A-2) below you can easily see how the beginning Prolog is ‘mirrored’ in the ending Epilog.

The Climactic Center of the Book of Revelation

In the chiastic structure of Revelation the climax of the book occurs in its center, between Revelation 11:15–12:12. At this point, ‘great voices in heaven’ announce:

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

Immediately afterward, Revelation describes a war in heaven and Satan is cast down from heaven to the earth.

This is the decisive turning point of the Book of Revelation. Then, after losing his place in heaven, the dragon wages war against the saints with great fury. The conflict on earth intensifies throughout the remaining chapters until Jesus returns in power and great glory. (Matthew 24:30, Mark 13:26, Luke 21:27)

A Dramatization of Revelation’s Sequence

This sequence—Satan’s expulsion from heaven, the resulting tribulation on earth, and the millennial reign of Christ through His faithful overcomers—forms the central storyline of my Positive Apocalypse trilogy.

The trilogy presents these prophetic themes through a fictional story designed to help readers imagine what these events might look like—and how believers can prepare spiritually and practically—as they unfold in the real world.

A combat medevac mission turns catastrophic when an RPG kills the pilot and forces a wounded copilot to make an impossible choice under fire. Courage, sacrifice, and survivor’s guilt collide in a moment where “greater love has no one than this” becomes more than a verse—it becomes a lived reality.

But the battle doesn’t end on the battlefield.

As the dust settles on earth, the narrative pulls back the veil on the unseen realm. In God’s heavenly court, accusations are weighed, eternal destinies are recorded, and a pivotal decision is made that will change the course of mankind’s history.

Why I’m Doing This

The Positive Apocalypse trilogy is more than an entertaining story.

I wrote it to challenge fear-based end-times theology, to replace speculation with Scripture, and to reframe the end-times as something God’s people are meant to overcome, not escape.

The audiobook project allows that message to reach people who learn better by listening — as well as commuters, workers, the visually impaired, or those simply overwhelmed by reading.

I’m also pairing the audiobook episodes with something I’ve wanted to do for a long time . . .

A Nonfiction Companion to the Positive Apocalypse Trilogy

Every disciple knows Jesus told us to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

Every night when I pray this line of the Lord’s Prayer, the Spirit reminds me that my spirit is already glorified—dwelling 24/7 in God’s presence in the heavenly realm. He challenges me to manifest His glorious kingdom in my earthly experience, bringing His love and power to people I’ll come into contact with tomorrow.

• According to Romans 8:30, disciples are called, justified, and glorified (past tense).

• According to Revelation 1:6, disciples are now priests in Christ’s kingdom. A priest is a mediator, bringing people’s needs to God, and bringing God’s words and power to people in response.

Then He challenges me to walk in this reality now, by faith, in my daily, earthly life—not striving to become something, but living from what God has already declared true.

He wants me to believe—to grasp the reality of who I already am in the heavenly realm—and walk in this self-concept, exercising a Melchizedekian priesthood as the Spirit leads.

End-Time Endurance

As someone who’s been watching end-time signs since the 1970s, it’s easy to drift into weariness—or even complacency—about the possible imminence of prophetic events. I never would have believed this present evil world system would still be dominant in 2025, with 2026 just days away.

Endurance, then, is not optional. It is a critical attribute for disciples as days and weeks turn into years of watching, waiting, and remaining faithful.
